About the Exhibit:
This exhibition features selected works by third grade art students at Public School 101 in Forest Hills, Queens.
The human figure has been a favorite subject of artists throughout time, and young children’s earliest drawings are often of themselves and the people around them. This fascination only continues as they grow; with the right instruction it can be harnessed to teach them about the body and its depiction in art.
It can also result in a joyous riot of ideas and color. With this in mind, the third grade students of Queens Public School 101 were introduced to da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa,” and worked together to identify the components of the composition. They then created their own portraits, learning about proper proportions and the limitless possibilities of background and color along the way. The upshot is a vibrant group of drawings, each colored by a modern, personal touch—some subtle, some central.

About the Student Art Project
Four times a year the Child Mind Institute invites public and independent schools to participate in the Student Art Project, a gallery program dedicated to displaying works of art created by student artists. We invite schools to prepare an exhibition for our gallery based on a theme chosen by one of their own art teachers. Student pieces are displayed prominently in the gallery created by our resident curator, Angela Gage. We then invite student artists, their families, and the entire school community to join us for an opening reception to launch the school’s Student Art Project.
If your child's school would like to participate in a future gallery show, please contact Angela Gage, the Student Art Project Curator, at 646.625.4281 or angela.gage@childmind.org. Art teachers are also welcome to contact us on behalf of their students.
