Dr. Samantha Miller of the Child Mind Institute wants to lend a hand to such young residents living in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx, the poorest congressional district in the country. Dr. Miller is donating $40,000 through her family foundation to Haven Academy, a school sponsored by the New York Foundling, a child welfare agency in the city.

Dr. Harold Koplewicz sits down to address how to tackle hard questions about divorce, job loss and illness from kids of all ages. They are difficult topics to discuss with anyone, but with kids, special finesse is required. Dr. Koplewicz gives some smart scripts to use.

Education Update writes about the 10th annual Adam Jeffrey Katz Memorial Lecture. The lecture is intended to address the knowledge gap on ADHD and dyslexia. Many people assume ADHD is bad behavior stemming from bad parenting and not a medical condition. Causing almost 50 percent of youngsters with ADHD to never be diagnosed and, therefore, never treated.

The Child Mind Institute's Dr. Michael Milham and Dr. F. Xavier Castellanos authored a PLoS ONE study investigating how personality traits are reflected in the brain's functional architecture. Personality describes persistent human behavioral responses to broad classes of environmental stimuli. It was a challenging study, in part due to the difficulty of designing appropriate task probes. 

Dr. Harold Koplewicz, president of the Child Mind Institute was named one of the New York magazine's best child psychiatrists. Dr. Koplewicz is one of nine New York doctors to be named on the 2012 New York magazine list.

Dr. Harold Koplewicz gave the commencement address for the Maplebrook School this weekend. The Maplebrook School and Center for the Advancement of Postsecondary Studies is an international coeducational boarding-day school for young people with learning disabilities who are 11 to 21 years old. During his speech, Koplewicz said dealing with challenges, not only makes a person stronger, but also kinder. “All of you are my heroes,” he said.
